Respiratory Physiology: Part 1 – Ventilation & Lung Mechanics On Demand Course

In this tutorial we will provide a clinically orientated journey to build a detailed understanding of how air moves in and out of our lungs, and why this process fails in common respiratory conditions. This session focuses on the mechanical foundations of breathing, including pressure-volume relationships, lung and chest wall compliance, airway resistance, and the role of surfactant. You’ll learn how these principles underpin lung volumes, spirometry findings, and the work of breathing, and how they translate directly to physiotherapy assessment and interventions such as positioning, mobilisation, hyperinflation techniques and breath stacking.
